This 9ct Gold (Front and back) Victorian locket is a mesmerising and romantic piece of sweetheart jewellery. Beautifully adorned with an engraved bird amongst flowers, this is a locket rich in charm and history.
The locket measures 1.6 x 2cm and it weighs 2.59g. It dates to the late 1800s and remains in wonderful condition. The inside comes with its original frames and covers, and is ready to hold your own photographs or keepsakes. The locket shuts securely.
No hallmarks remain on this pretty locket, but it has been verified as 9ct Gold, Front and back, which means its core is made of a strong metal and the 9ct gold used on its outside.
Birds frequently appear on antique jewellery of the victorian period. Swallows and doves in particular adorned all kinds of sweetheart jewellery. Swallows are known to mate for life and always return to their nests, so it made sense for them to be on jewellery that lovers would give to each other, either as a mark of forever love, or to keep at ones heart when apart from each other.
